Challenge
JEG'S, the Columbus, Ohio-based high-performance automotive product company needed help designing and manufacturing a progressive new air scoop. The challenge was to create a new style scoop to better reproduce the looks of Top Fuel Dragsters and Funny Car air intakes. Laser would need to bring its product design and engineering skills to the task, and use its rapid prototyping, model making and production expertise to manage the program from start to finish.
Solution
Achieving JEG'S vision for the project required a collaborative effort between Laser's designers and engineers. Our in-house design team created concept sketches to facilitate the design direction and our Model Development Lab went to work on a volume study model to better represent its real proportions. From that 3-D sketch, a virtual model was made that included not only the scoop itself, but also the mounting and linkage mechanisms that would be part of the complete product offering. An SLA version was then made to check the accuracy of the virtual model. Laser partnered with two companies to conduct the foundry pattern equipment and production casting.
Result
The product, dubbed The "InJEGtor" Scoop, has proved to be both a commercial and artistic success for JEG'S. With most competitor products showing their age, the InJEGtor breathed new life into a market segment with limited options. Because of its size and style, the scoop made a major impact with the company's customers and gave many performance enthusiasts a professional Funny Car-style scoop that works as well as it looks.
