Rapid Prototyping - Winegard

Winegard
RoadTrip-XLP Antenna Dish

Challenge

Winegard, a leading manufacturer of quality television reception products, enlisted the expertise of Laser Reproductions to develop the first product concept and do the initial prototype for the "RoadTrip XLP." The aggressive product development schedule called for design to begin in August of 2004, with production slated to begin in January of 2005.

Solution

Winegard worked with Laser Reproductions to develop the first product concept and create the initial prototype. The "RoadTrip XLP" prototype was first presented to consumers the following year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The positive response to the production-like quality and appearance of the model, prompted Winegard to initiate an aggressive new product development program with a very short time-to-market goal. Laser Reproductions was chosen to provide a total product solution—from concept to manufacturing.

Results

The latest version of the antenna dish is a low profile, aerodynamic unit, designed to fit onto roof racks of cars and other vehicles with an integrated look. The aggressive product development schedule called for design to begin in August of 2004, with production starting in January 2005. The price point and cost were also critical objectives, requiring the collaborating partners to optimize the solution with respect to design features, materials selection and manufacturing options. The first functional prototypes were presented at the SEMA (automotive aftermarket products) show in Las Vegas in November of 2004, where it won the Popular Mechanics Editor's Choice Award.
